Restful Elephants - 01:12 pm

07 Dec 2009

It was a quiet day in Moremi.
The Xakanaxa pride has not been seen since last week Wednesday and I have not seen any sign of them or the buffalo over the last two days. Tomorrow will be dedicated to locating them.
I’m familiar with the herd of elephants we spent the morning with. The matriarch is not the most subdued and has charged the vehicle in the past.

We kept our distance and the herd became relaxed enough in our presence that they moved into the shade of a Mopane and went to sleep.
The adults slept standing while the calves and teenagers lay down. There was one calf which was restless and it kept climbing on and over its siblings. Eventually it found a comfortable spot and the entire herd was asleep. They slept for over and hour, some of the younger elephants needed a push and a prod to get them up. They then moved off across the floodplain to the nearest water.
