More elephants in camp - 04:30 am

17 May 2009

- By Andy Crawford

We have been away in Maun this weekend, leaving Jason and Pricka to hold the fort. Generally at this time of year, with the interior rainwater pans drying up now that the rainy season is over, we expect increased elephant movements in the vicinity of our camp as the herds access the river water close by. Yesterday, however, we literally had elephants in our camp.

We have become used to, and even a bit blase about, elephants grazing quietly around us while we go about our daily business, and love hearing their purring and rumbling and gurgling as they munch the mopane trees around our tents.

I suspect this bull was bolder than usual because we were all in Maun and the camp was quieter (and calmer and more civilized generally) that when the whole noisy tribe is here. As you can see from Jason’s photographs, he wandered around our laundry area and then casually munched on a bush at our washing up station.

Brad and Jason went out today to follow up on reports that the Bodamatau pride had killed a zebra at Maya Pan, out of their usual territory. They found that the Bodamatau pride had eaten the zebra and returned to Magxwegana. The Xakanaxa pride (without the two males) had returned and were sleeping in the vicinity of the kill. They still have not killed and eaten anything substantial as the youngest cubs are still very thin.
