Lions Monitor Lizard - 04:39 pm

23 Nov 2009

The Xakanaxa pride were moving west and closer to the buffalo. The usual summer afternoon rains then arrived and the pride sought shelter under the first available bush. Lions, like most felines, do not enjoy water and always look grumpy when they are caught out in the rain. One lioness moved to some thicker bush for cover and on the way flushed a water monitor (Varanus niloticus).

These lizards are fairly large, this one was nearly 1.5 meters and have a fearless attitude. It was not scared by the lions and stood its ground. It would always stay side on to the lions and by puffing up its neck made itself look far larger than it actually was. Not one of the lions even touched it and they kept their distance. This could be that the tail of the monitor looks similar to a snake. It was amusing when a lion ventured close the monitor would hiss and flick its tail, causing not only the nearest lion, but all of them to jump and move further away. The lions eventually lost interest and moved off.
