Buffalo, egrets and cornflower vernonias - 01:43 am

08 Apr 2009

The lions continue to show no interest in the buffalo herd to the south and we begin to suspect that they are, bizarrely, unaware of it’s presence.

Brad and Jason remain with the lions and we head down to spend some time with the buffalo. It is a small herd numbering eighty or so individuals and they are slowly grazing their way towards the west. As usual there are a multitude of oxpeckers and egrets in attendance. The egrets follow the herds and pick off insects that get flushed from the grass by the moving animals. Their delicate white plumage and quick sharp always provide such a lovely conterpoint to the dark lumbering mass of the buffalo. They dart carefully in amongst the big animals taking care not to get trampled or horned by these sometimes irascible beasts.

The herd continues to move west, through a dense patch of late-blooming cornflower vernonia flowers, and into some thick kalahari appleleaf. The lions remain apparently unaware of their presence.
