Bachelors Brawl - 09:34 am

25 Sep 2009

By Jason Loughran
These bachelor herds are made up only of bulls, from young teenagers who have been recently kicked out of the breeding herds to mature old bulls.
There is a hierarchy within the herd and it is usually the older, bigger bulls who are more dominant.

There was one middle aged bull of around 22 years who would start pushing some younger bulls around to assert himself.
As soon as the younger bull would show submission by turning its backside towards him, he would immediately go in search of another young bull to push around.
It was only when a much older and bigger bull approached him that he calmed and left the others in peace.

This energy spilled over to 2 older bulls who began to challenge each other.
There confrontation was much more playful and relaxed. They would slowly rest their trunks and heads on each other, trying to weigh down their opponent.
At times they would put their trunks into the others mouth, this is a way of recognizing each other.
